Banana Shire Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Operator – Treatment Technology to join our Council Services team. This is a hands‑on leadership role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Council’s water and wastewater treatment facilities.
Working under the Supervisor Treatment Technology, you will provide technical expertise, mentor treatment operators, and ensure our plants run to the highest safety, environmental and regulatory standards.
About the Role
In this role, you will:
- Lead, mentor and support a team of Operators, Assistant Treatment Plant Operators and Trainees.
- Oversee daily and after‑hours operation, monitoring and reporting of water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Ensure compliance with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, the Drinking Water Quality Management Plan, Recycled Water Management Plans and Environmental Authority conditions.
- Plan, coordinate and carry out operational and maintenance activities to ensure plant performance, reliability and safety.
- Manage operational data, including SWIMs entries, sampling, testing and monthly reporting.
- Respond to unplanned breakdowns, alarms, exceedances and customer enquiries.
- Undertake asset condition assessments, maintain accurate records and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Liaise with internal teams, external agencies, contractors and suppliers.
About You
To be successful, you will bring:
Mandatory
- Queensland ‘C’ class manual driver’s licence.
- Certificate III in Water/Wastewater Treatment Operations (or equivalent).
- General Construction Induction Card (White Card).
- Strong work ethic and extensive experience in municipal water and wastewater treatment operations.
- Ability to mentor others and work effectively in a team.
- Knowledge of relevant legislative requirements for treatment operations.
- Supervisory, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
- Computer literacy, including MS Office and SCADA/Telemetry systems.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Understanding of EEO and Workplace Health & Safety principles.
Highly Desirable
- Certificate IV or Diploma in Water/Wastewater Treatment Operations (or equivalent).
- Experience using ClearSCADA or Citect.
- Confined Space ticket and/or forklift licence.
- Experience in local government environment.

- Participation in an on‑call roster, weekend and public holiday work as required.
- Ability to meet physical demands of the role.
