About the role
This role will work within the Trace Analysis team and will support the Sample Management team as required in Sydney Water’s world class laboratories and Australia’s largest dedicated water testing and research facilities. Help us innovate to meet the challenges of our growing cities by:
- Demonstrating advanced experience in LC-MS/MS and/or GC-MS/MS, including method optimisation, instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and complex problem resolution.
- Applying a strong understanding of quality assurance and quality control principles for the analysis of water and wastewater, including compliance with NATA ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements and ISO 9001 quality management systems.
- Identifying, evaluating, and implementing opportunities to optimise laboratory assets, equipment, systems, and processes to improve efficiency, quality, and service delivery.
- Performing laboratory sample preparation and analysis using specialised instrumentation, while consistently delivering accurate and timely results within agreed customer turnaround times.
- Providing technical guidance, training, and mentoring to support capability development and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Demonstrating proficiency in laboratory and business software systems, including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), scheduling tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Promoting a strong safety culture through active compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements, and taking personal responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others.
About You
This role is suited to an experienced laboratory professional with a strong background in chemistry, environmental science, or chemical engineering, and extensive experience operating within a quality-focused laboratory environment. You are a proactive and collaborative team member who demonstrates technical expertise, sound judgement, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification (Degree and/or equivalent Certificate in Science) and demonstrated experience within a related scientific discipline
- More than five years' experience working independently in a laboratory, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high quality results.
- Demonstrated experience performing complex analytical testing using advanced instrumentation such as LC-MS/MS and/or GC-MS/MS, including troubleshooting and routine maintenance.
- Experience in PFAS analysis, including sample preparation, instrumental analysis, interpretation of results, and quality control processes, will be highly regarded.
- Approval as an authorised signatory across multiple analytical methods, with the ability to review, validate, and release analytical data.
- Experience working within a NATA-accredited laboratory, with a strong understanding of ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, quality assurance principles, and laboratory quality control systems.
- A demonstrated ability to identify, lead, and implement continuous improvement initiatives, delivering measurable benefits in quality, efficiency, safety, or customer outcomes.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to share technical knowledge, support colleagues, and contribute positively to team performance.
- A commitment to maintaining a safe working environment by consistently applying health, safety, and environmental requirements and promoting safe laboratory practices.
- Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to provide technical guidance, share knowledge, and support the development of colleagues across the team.
- Flexibility and a willingness to work outside core business hours, when required, to meet operational and contractual obligations.
