WATER EDUCATION RESOURCES FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Australia is a dry continent with a highly variable climate. While it generally receives significant rainfall and is well-endowed with groundwater resources, these water sources occur in northern and central Australia rather than in southern areas where it is most needed for agriculture and urban supplies. Understanding the complex story of water in Australia is critical for students making future informed decisions about managing our water resources sustainably.
Education surrounding water as a valuable resource is further developed during high school years from ages 12-18, as linked with the Geography and Science syllabus and the focus shifts to understanding sustainability on a deeper level; the urban water cycle in greater complexity; indigenous water practices; recycling, reuse and wastewater; the treatment and management of water across the country and in different environments locally and globally and during times of flood and drought.
