Chemists in the water industry use science to understand what is in our water and wastewater, and how treatment processes can improve it.
You might test drinking water for substances that could affect human health, analyse wastewater before it is released back into the environment, or help treatment plants operate more efficiently.
You'll collect and analyse samples, investigate unusual results and work with engineers, scientists and operators to solve water quality challenges.
You may also help develop new treatment methods or respond to incidents such as contamination events.
DAY TO DAY WORK
- Collecting and preparing water and wastewater samples for analysis.
- Testing samples for chemicals, nutrients, metals and other substances.
- Monitoring water quality and identifying changes or unusual results.
- Using laboratory instruments and analytical techniques to measure contaminants.
- Checking that drinking water meets required health and quality standards.
- Analysing wastewater to ensure treatment processes are working effectively.
- Investigating potential contamination and unusual water quality results.
- Supporting treatment plant operators and engineers with scientific advice.
- Recording, analysing and reporting laboratory results.
- Maintaining laboratory equipment and following strict quality and safety procedures.

Qualifications for this role
The following qualifications are required for this role:
- Bachelor of Science, with a major in Chemistry or a related discipline.
Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or Applied Chemistry can be particularly relevant.
