Risk and Quality Specialists identify, assess, and mitigate operational and safety risks.
They implement quality assurance processes to ensure reliable, compliant, and safe water services.
In the water industry, risks could include droughts, floods, bushfires, cyber attacks, equipment failures, extreme weather or disruptions to water supplies.
You'll work with teams across the organisation to understand these risks, assess how likely they are and how serious the impact could be.
Then you'll help develop plans to prevent problems or respond quickly if they happen.
You might work on a major infrastructure project, help prepare for a natural disaster or support plans to keep drinking water and wastewater services operating during an emergency.
It's a career that involves thinking ahead, asking "what if?", and helping communities become more prepared for an uncertain future.
DAY TO DAY WORK
- Identifying risks that could affect water services, infrastructure, projects or customers.
- Assessing how likely risks are and what their potential impact could be.
- Working with teams to develop plans to prevent or reduce risks.
- Monitoring emerging risks such as climate change, extreme weather and cyber threats.
- Helping prepare emergency and business continuity plans.
- Supporting risk assessments for new projects and major infrastructure.
- Investigating incidents and identifying lessons that can prevent future problems.
- Maintaining risk registers and tracking actions to manage identified risks.
- Preparing reports and presenting risk information to managers and project teams.
- Working with engineers, scientists, emergency management teams, cybersecurity specialists and other professionals to improve resilience.

Qualifications for this role

- Bachelor degree in Commerce (Risk Management), Business, Finance, Engineering, Environmental Science, Emergency Management or a related field can provide pathways into risk roles.
- There is no single degree required, and people often move into risk management after gaining experience in another professional area.
