Waterway Health Advisors help understand and improve the health of rivers, creeks, wetlands and other waterways.
You'll monitor water quality and aquatic ecosystems, investigate what is affecting their health and help develop solutions.
You might collect water samples in the field, assess aquatic plants and animals, analyse environmental data or support projects that restore damaged waterways.
In the Australian water industry, you could work with water utilities, councils, government agencies and environmental groups to understand how water management decisions affect rivers and ecosystems.
You'll also help balance the needs of communities, water users and the environment.
Your work can help protect biodiversity, improve water quality and ensure Australia's waterways remain healthy and resilient as the climate changes.
DAY TO DAY WORK
- Visiting rivers, creeks, wetlands and other waterways to assess their health.
- Collecting water samples and monitoring water quality.
- Measuring factors such as nutrients, oxygen, temperature and other indicators of waterway health.
- Monitoring aquatic plants, animals and habitats.
- Analysing environmental data to identify changes or emerging problems.
- Investigating the causes of pollution or declining waterway health.
- Supporting projects that restore and improve rivers and aquatic ecosystems.
- Working with scientists, engineers, Traditional Owners, landholders, community groups and government agencies.
- Preparing reports and communicating findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Helping develop strategies to protect waterways from pressures such as climate change, urban development and pollution.

qualifications for this role
- Bachelor degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Aquatic Science, Biology, Natural Resource Management.
- Additional training in water quality monitoring, GIS, environmental assessment or ecological field techniques can be useful.
